The new looks, updated traditions, and influential designers defining men´s fashion today, from the world´s capital of gentlemen´s style. Combining the unique heritage of gentlemen´s tailoring with a progressive approach to street style, London is fast becoming the world´s capital of men´s fashion. For this book, Dylan Jones presents a discerning sartorialist´s guide to the capital, from London´s coolest neighborhoods to the studios of its most influential designers and beyond. Beginning with an exploration of London´s chicest urban villages, the book reflects the extraordinary eclecticism of the city´s street style-from envelope-pushing streetwear in Shoreditch to classic tailoring in Mayfair. Forays into the coolest and hardest-to-find menswear shops in the city at once reveal the sources of the fashions on display and capture the atmosphere of the capital. At the heart of the book are profiles of London´s top designers-from world renowned brands to up-and-coming names, these are the designers whose work is shaping the future of menswear. Legends such as Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood, whose flair for subversion colors their refinement, sit alongside younger designers such as Christopher Shannon and Agi & Sam, pioneers of bringing graphics and pattern to luxury streetwear. Icons of classic elegance such as Tom Ford and Burberry contrast with a new generation of designers, from Nigel Cabourn to Mr. Hare, whose redefined silhouettes and innovative materials take the traditions of Savile Row into the new millennium.
A fiery passion which treads the line between lust and hate… He wants to hate her, but he’s passionately attracted to her. Just who is Lily Wrightington - cynical fashion photographer or studious art historian? Prince Marco di Lucchesi can’t hide his haughty disdain for this Englishwoman - or his attraction to her! The atmosphere between them alternately sizzles with dislike and erotic promise. If Marco drops his guard, the passion he’s trying to keep firmly under wraps might just unleash itself… 1. Paul Fallon is a fashion advertising guru. He´s a genius at dealing with difficult editors, art directors, and designers alike. He thrives on the chaotic atmosphere and constant challenges. But in his personal life, he´s hoping for peace and stability. Settling down with a nice doctor or lawyer sounds perfect. Anyone but an artist. He´s been there, done that, and he doesn´t want to relive the heartache. Seth Landau is a model, occasional guitarist, and aspiring painter. He´s quirky, flighty, and wise beyond his years. Life has taught him some tough lessons, then given him opportunities he never dreamed of. He´s learned to appreciate the fragility of life and to express it in his work. Seth´s flare for the absurd combined with a supple mind and a beautiful body are too alluring for Paul to ignore. Against his best intentions, Paul is drawn to the younger man whose particular brand of crazy challenges Paul to accept that things aren´t always as they seem. Sometimes taking a chance is better than being safe. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tyler Stevens. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/054790/bk_acx0_054790_sample.mp3. What did it feel like to be a woman living in Paris from 1939 to 1949? These were years of fear, power, aggression, courage, deprivation and secrets until - finally - renewal and retribution. Even at the darkest moments of Occupation, glamour was ever present. French women wore lipstick. Why? It was women who came face to face with the German conquerors on a daily basis - perhaps selling them their clothes or travelling alongside them on the Metro, where a German soldier had priority over seats. By looking at a wide range of individuals from collaborators to resisters, actresses and prostitutes to teachers and writers, Anne Sebba shows that women made life-and-death decisions every day, and, in an atmosphere where sex became currency, often did whatever they needed to survive. Her fascinating cast includes both native Parisian women and those living in Paris temporarily: American women and Nazi wives, spies, mothers, mistresses, and fashion and jewellery designers. Some women, like the heiress Béatrice de Camondo or novelist Irène Némirovsky, converted to Catholicism; others like lesbian racing driver Violette Morris embraced the Nazi philosophy; only a handful, like Coco Chanel, retreated to the Ritz with a German lover. In enthralling detail Sebba explores the aftershock of the Second World War and the choices demanded. How did the women who survived to see the Liberation of Paris come to terms with their actions and those of others? Although politics lies at its heart, Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in this most feminine of cities.
Rome is the capital and largest city of Italy and of the Lazio region. It´s the famed city of the Roman Empire, the Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita (sweet life), the Vatican City, and Three Coins in the Fountain. Rome, as a millennium-long center of power, culture and religion, having been the center of one of the globe´s greatest civilizations ever, has exerted a huge influence over the world in its 2,500 years of existence. The Historic Center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With wonderful palaces, millennium-old churches and basilicas, grand romantic ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues, and graceful fountains, Rome has an immensely rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of Europe´s and the world´s most visited, famous, influential, and beautiful capitals. Today, Rome has a growing nightlife scene and is also seen as a shopping heaven, being regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world (some of Italy´s oldest jewelry and clothing establishments were founded in the city). With so many sights and things to do, Rome can truly be classified a "global city". Rome has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In the winter months, daytime temperatures are usually pleasant and range from 10-15 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures tend to stay slightly above freezing. That being said, the occasional cold snap can cause temperatures to fall below freezing, and it is not unheard of for light flurries of snow to fall on occasion, though accumulation is rare, and major snowstorms are known to occur only once every 20-25 years. 1. (2014/Exhibit) 10 tracks. ´TRINI AT PJ´S STANDS THE TEST OF TIME...Wonderful songs, brilliantly performed.´ With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the biggest singing stars of the Folk Revival. ´Trini Lopez at PJ´s´ made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for over a year. The album included the chart-topping ´If I Had a Hammer´ which reached number one in 36 countries and was a radio favorite for many years. The hit single sold more than 4 million copies and the album sold over a million and was awarded a gold record. This was the album that made Lopez an instant success and the live party-a-go-go atmosphere of the record did much to put Trini´s likable energy over the top. What he did, at the head of a trio with Mickey Jones on drums and Dick Brant on bass, was to make folk-pop swing. Other songs include ´This Land Is Your Land,´ and ´Gotta Travel On.´ It could be surmised that by treating such material in this fashion, Lopez had a tiny influence upon the subsequent folk-rock movement...Though, Lopez was more the all-around entertainer with a Latin lilt than he was a pure folk singer, so you also get ´America´ (from West Side Story), ´La Bamba,´ Ray Charles´ ´What´d I Say,´ ´Volare,´ and ´When the Saints Go Marching In.´ He scored thirteen chart singles through 1968 and became one of the country´s top nightclub performers of that era.
´´I dreamed of New York; I am going there.´´ On May 31, 1953, 23-year-old Sylvia Plath arrived in New York City for a one-month stint at ´´the intellectual fashion magazine´´ Mademoiselle to be a guest editor for its prestigious annual college issue. Over the next 26 days, the bright, blond New England collegian lived at the Barbizon Hotel, attended Balanchine ballets, watched a game at Yankee Stadium, and danced at the West Side Tennis Club. She typed rejection letters to writers from The New Yorker and ate an entire bowl of caviar at an advertising luncheon. She stalked Dylan Thomas and fought off an aggressive diamond-wielding delegate from the United Nations. She took hot baths, had her hair done, and discovered her signature drink (vodka, no ice). Young, beautiful, and on the cusp of an advantageous career, she was supposed to be having the time of her life. Drawing on in-depth interviews with fellow guest editors whose memories infuse these pages, Elizabeth Winder reveals how these 26 days indelibly altered how Plath saw herself, her mother, her friendships, and her romantic relationships, and how this period shaped her emerging identity as a woman and as a writer. Pain, Parties, Work - the three words Plath used to describe that time - shows how Manhattan´s alien atmosphere unleashed an anxiety that would stay with her for the rest of her all-too-short life. Thoughtful and illuminating, this captivating portrait invites us to see Sylvia Plath before The Bell Jar, before she became an icon - a young woman with everything to live for. 1. Language: English. Your Vehicle Is an Extension of You! is an all-encompassing book that addresses the philosophy of proactive auto care and how our vehicles reflect how we see and the strategies we employ to improve ourselves. As long as we improve ourselves, we improve our families and communities. We improve driving and motor safety overall. We also connect with our children in a fashion that is applicable far beyond simply keeping the vehicle clean; this is addressed in tools noted in the book such as Bentley Brandon´s ´´Backseat Pledge´´. We have to have a vehicle mindset. Second only to our house, a vehicle is the most significant investment we make. We have to consider that auto care is still a hands-on art and science. Machine washing really destroys paint jobs and chrome, and leaves years of debris that could easily be removed by hand. We have to remember there is a respect we have to have for our vehicle, our passengers, and ourselves. Our passengers need to respect each other, our immediate safety, and the focus needed by the driver to perform accordingly. This ensures safe travel and a peaceful driving atmosphere. With Bentley Car Care tips, we can generate checklists to address and assess where we are as people, vehicle owners, passengers, and fellow motorists as far as safety and safeguarding the quality of the vehicle in which we drive or ride. 1.
